Mini Sculpture (Ages 6 to 10)
Students will explore their personal vision with clay. Children have a strong sense of touch and can “see” with their fingers. Thus, working with clay is very visceral and expressive. Various techniques will be covered such as sculpting, hand building with slabs, bead making, coiling, and texturing. For the sculpting component, students will be asked to make their two favorites animals into one. They will draw a rough sketch first and then be shown how to translate their 2d drawing into a small 3d sculpture. They will then make a clay container to store their sculpture in. They will either paint the finished pieces with acrylic paint or use coloured sculpey.Skills sets covered: 3 dimensional thinking (structure, shapes and forms). Learning how to break objects down into their basic shapes (sphere, cone, square, pyramid). Texturing and using pattern.
